As with every parenting decision, the choice to use an electric bottle warmer is a polarised one.
Initially, my mother questioned my decision, arguing that boiled water would be just as effective in warming up bottled milk.
However, four months on, I am pleased to note that the device is now a staple in my mother’s home and plays an important role in the preparation of my baby’s milk.
As a work-from-home mother, having an electric bottle warmer is really convenient as it allows me to multitask and maximise my time. While I wait for the milk to warm, I can entertain the baby, do chores or get some work done.
Prior to receiving the Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature Electric Bottle and Food Warmer, I was using two different brands of electric bottle warmers – one at my mother’s house (Warmer A) and another at home (Warmer B).
The first noticeable difference about the Tommee Tippee warmer compared to the other two is its size – it is much bigger than the other two despite offering similar functions. This is probably because it is also for use to warm baby’s food.
My mother commented that in a small kitchen like hers, size matters, as there is limited space on the kitchen countertop.
On the flipside, some users may appreciate the larger size as it can accommodate most bottle sizes, especially wider mouth bottles such as Tommee Tippee ones. I liked that the bigger size allowed me to refill water easily into the warmer even with the milk bottle warming inside.
The Tommee Tippee bottle warmer is easy to operate as it comes with a “Minimum” and three other heat settings. Using the highest setting (No. 3), it took me less than 15 minutes to warm a 9-ounce bottle of milk that was kept in the fridge.
While this was comparably slower than Warmer A, I appreciated that the heating was more gradual and even, which lessened the likelihood of overheating the milk – a problem I often experienced when using Warmer A. High temperatures adversely affect the beneficial properties of breast milk.
It would be great if the Tommee Tippee warmer came with a built-in timer so I would not have to keep checking the milk temperature every few minutes.
Unlike Warmer A, the Tommee Tippee unit did not have a temperature indicator. This would be a helpful feature as one would not have to do the guesswork of which heat setting to use to achieve the desired temperature.
Do note that the Tommee Tippee warmer does not have an On/Off button like Warmer B, so one would have to either switch to the “Minimum” setting or turn off the main switch when the warmer is not in use.
Pros: Easy to use; fits most bottle sizes; wider mouth makes it easy to refill water during warming without spilling; gradual, even heating process lessens likelihood of overheating milk.
Cons: Larger size may be cumbersome for those with limited kitchen countertop space; slower than some warmers and for those who want milk heat up quickly; does not have temperature setting, built-in timer or On/Off button.
