What is it?
A picture book.
Who is it by?
By Libby Gleeson and Freya Blackwood, and published by Scholastic.
What is it about?
It’s about a girl and a boy who find a book. They learn to take care of it and protect it from dust, rain and the dog so that it can be read over and over again.
What can children learn from it?
This is an introduction to books. While the two characters learn not to leave the book lying around to be chewed on by animals, and beaten by the elements, they also discover that books take them on a magical journey.
It’s a good way to teach kids to take care of their books and that books will open new and exciting worlds to them.
They will also learn to appreciate what they have, like the little kids in the book who don’t have much and walk around barefoot.
What did I like about it?
The text is minimal and relying heavily on the graphics to tell the story. I really liked the artwork – it has an old style charm about it.
I also like the message it conveys to children. However, such young readers might not be able to appreciate the values highlighted.
Where to get it?
Scholastic books can be bought at major bookstores. If you don’t see this book on the shelves, the bookstore might need to order it for you.
Should you get it?
Only if your child is keen.
