What is it?
A picture book.
Who is it by?
By Melanie Lee, illustrated by David Liew and published by MPH.
What is it about?
This is the fifth book in The Adventures of Squirky the Alien series.
So far, we’ve seen Squirky and his adoptive sister Emma travel from planet to planet searching for his birth parents. Along the way they have met some very nice aliens, who seem genuinely interested in helping them.
This time they land on Planet P, where they find themselves walking through a forest. They meet some aliens called the Gardeners, led by the Chief Gardener.
He tells them that Mr and Mrs Quirky, Squirky’s parents, did land on Planet P, but they have gone through a portal to the Garden Galaxy, where many of Planet Q’s (where Squirky originally comes from) babies went. They thought Squirky might be there.
Squirky then has to make a decision – to go to the Garden Galaxy or stay with his human family on Earth, because once he goes to the Garden Galaxy, he can’t come back.
What can children learn from it?
Children will learn about what family really means, about adoption and even making decisions.
What did I like about it?
Unlike the previous four books in this series, this one might be a bit harder for children to digest. While older kids and parents will appreciate it, it will take a bit more explaining to get the ideas across to younger kids.
I’m not sure young children will be able to grasp the concept of choosing one family over the other. Nonetheless, parents might still be able to go ahead and tell them the story in this book and perhaps revisit the topic later on.
Where to get it?
It is available at MPH bookstores.
Should you get it?
If you have been following the series so far, yes, you need to get it to find out what happens to Squirky.
