What is it?
A picture book.
Who is it by?
By Diani Lee, illustrations by Komeil Zarin and published by MPH.
What is it about?
This is an alphabet book with a difference. Instead of the usual apple, ball, cat and dog entries, there are things like appreciate, believe, cherish and deliver. The book offers moral values that parents can share with their kids.
The story in the book is about Grandpa sharing his favourite A to Z’s with the little ones.
What can children learn from it?
Children will learn all the good moral values that parents hope they will slowly understand as they grow older. I’m not sure small children will understand everything in the book. For example, appreciate, motivate and volunteer may take a bit more explaining and might not be that easy for kids to grasp if they’re very young. But, parents can still take the opportunity to explain it to their kids and give them examples that the kids can relate to.
What did I like about it?
The illustrations are beautiful. Komeil Zarin has done a commendable job ensuring the visuals complement the text and help kids understand what some of the values mean. The style of the artwork is gentle on the eyes and will make for pleasant night-time reading. There’s an old-school charm about the pictures.
Not only is the book refreshing because it highlights values; the examples given in the dialogue between the kids and the adults help to explain what the moral values mean, and they are relatable for Malaysian children.
Most of all this book stands out because it’s what all parents would really want to teach their kids beyond the usual ABC’s.
